Catch the Wind – Week 5
When A Whisper Becomes a Roar
Power and Clarity in the Holy Spirit
“Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.”—Acts 2:2 (NLT)
The Holy Spirit may whisper… but when we can hear and obey His voice, His power roars and He empowers us to move with clarity and boldness.
The question is not just, “Is God speaking?” but “Am I discerning His voice?”
1. The Wind Brings Power
The roar of the Spirit doesn’t just inspire — it ignites.
“And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.”—Acts 2:4 (NLT)
Acts 2:4 – The Holy Spirit filled them and gave them bold, supernatural ability.
BUT…
2. The Whisper Before the Power
For the whisper to turn to power, it demands discernment. (Spiritual Hearing)
Power without discernment leads to confusion. Power with discernment leads to fruit.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”—John 10:27
HUMAN UNDERSTANDING vs. DIVINE DISCERNMENT
Before we can truly hear the Spirit, we must confront a common trap.
- Human understanding submits to logic, human thinking, and strategy.
- Divine wisdom flows from hearing and obeying the Spirit.
Confusion happens when we mistake calculated decisions for spiritual discernment. Too often, we let comfort and logic silence obedience — and we excuse our resistance by calling it wisdom.
True discernment begins where human control ends.
Common sense may guide the how, but only the Holy Spirit defines the what.
Don’t let common sense talk you out of what only obedience can walk you into.
How to Know It’s the Holy Spirit Speaking
1. It agrees with Scripture
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.”—John 16:13 (NLT)
2. It glorifies Jesus
“He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.”—John 16:14 (NLT)
3. It produces spiritual fruit
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”—Galatians 5:22–23 (NLT)
4. It brings peace, not panic
“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.”—Colossians 3:15 (NLT)
5. It’s confirmed through community
“Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers.”—Proverbs 11:14 (NLT)
6. It’s consistent over time
“Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.”—James 1:17 (NLT)
7. It draws you into faith, not confusion
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people.”—1 Corinthians 14:33 (NLT)
8. It comes as a whisper
“And after the earthquake there was a fire—but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.”—1 Kings 19:12 (NLT)
9. It costs something
“Then he said to the crowd, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.’”—Luke 9:23 (NLT)
Faith Declaration
“I hear the voice of the Holy Spirit.
I will not be confused by the noise.
I will be led by the whisper and empowered by the roar.”
CONFESSION
Holy Spirit, when You whisper, I will listen.
When You roar, I will rise.
Let Your power move me, and let Your voice guide me.
I will walk boldly and wisely — with power and with peace.
