The Stand 1 – Stand Out: Message Notes

Craig Smee-The Stand

STAND — WEEK 1

STAND OUT

During the third year of King Jehoiakim’s reign in Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. The Lord gave him victory over King Jehoiakim of Judah and permitted him to take some of the sacred objects from the Temple of God. So Nebuchadnezzar took them back to the land of Babylonia and placed them in the treasure-house of his god. Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief of staff, to bring to the palace some of the young men of Judah’s royal family and other noble families, who had been brought to Babylon as captives. “Select only strong, healthy, and good-looking young men,” he said. “Make sure they are well versed in every branch of learning, are gifted with knowledge and good judgment, and are suited to serve in the royal palace. Train these young men in the language and literature of Babylon.” The king assigned them a daily ration of food and wine from his own kitchens. They were to be trained for three years, and then they would enter the royal service. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were four of the young men chosen, all from the tribe of Judah. The chief of staff renamed them with these Babylonian names: Daniel was called Belteshazzar. Hananiah was called Shadrach. Mishael was called Meshach. Azariah was called Abednego. But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.—Daniel 1:1–8 NLT

FORMATION IS NOT OPTIONAL

You are being formed. The only question is — by what?

“Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”—Romans 12:2 NLT

Conformed — Greek suschematizō – Pressed into an outward mold.

Transformed — Greek metamorphoō – Changed from the inside out.

“So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.”—Hebrews 2:1 NLT

“In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.”—Daniel 1:1 NLT

Israel had been warned for generations: If you abandon covenant faithfulness, exile will come.

“By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion.”—Psalm 137:1 NLT

Standing doesn’t begin when life feels stable.
Standing begins when everything feels uncertain.

You don’t stand to prove who you are.
You stand because you already know who you belong to.

Belonging precedes boldness.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.—1 Peter 2:9 NLT

Identity is received before it is displayed.

WHAT BABYLON REALLY IS

Azariah was called Abednego.—Daniel 1:3–7 NLT

Babylon didn’t just conquer territory. It reconstructed identity.

Environment shapes appetite. Appetite shapes allegiance. Allegiance shapes identity.

There are moments in life when the pressure to adjust who you are is subtle.
It sounds strategic. It sounds reasonable. It sounds harmless.

RESOLVE BEFORE PRESSURE

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.—Daniel 1:8 NLT

Resolved — Hebrew śûm To set firmly. To establish.

He set conviction internally before pressure came externally.

> “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too.” —1 Corinthians 10:21
NLT

Immature faith reacts to everything.
Mature faith guards what matters.

“A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”—James 1:8 NLT

PERSONAL DIAGNOSTIC

You don’t abandon conviction overnight. You negotiate it.

“No one can serve two masters.”—Matthew 6:24 NLT

Standing requires singular allegiance.

HOW DANIEL STOOD

“Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said. “At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king’s food. Then make your decision in light of what you see.” The attendant agreed to Daniel’s suggestion and tested them for ten days.—Daniel 1:12–14 NLT

Standing out is not about volume. It is about allegiance.

Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.—Colossians 4:6 NLT

“Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to STAND firm against all strategies of the devil.”—Ephesians 6:11 NLT

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”—Luke 16:10 NLT

“BUILDING TENSION”

If pressure exposed your allegiance today… What would it reveal?

If standing cost comfort…
Would you stand?

If standing cost approval…
Would you stand?

If standing cost opportunity…
Would you stand?

“Choose this day whom you will serve.”—Joshua 24:15 NLT

So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.—1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT

You don’t stand to prove who you are.
You stand because you already know who you belong to.

“And when you have done everything else…Stand.” – Ephesians 6:13
