The Power of Your Past – Message Notes

Craig Smee-Your Story

This week, we looked at how your story is more than a recap of past mistakes—it’s a mirror of God’s mercy. Your testimony doesn’t end with your salvation; it begins there. God uses your weakness to reveal His strength, and your confession to release healing. We learned that our story should reflect who Jesus is—not just what we’ve been through. Forgiveness, identity, and daily grace aren’t just side notes—they are central to living a testimony that brings glory to God. Your past isn’t something to hide—it’s something God can use.

Revelation 12:11 (NLT)

“And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.”

Your story doesn’t highlight your drama—it reflects God’s character.
It’s not about what you’ve been through, but about what He’s doing in you now.

MESSAGE NOTES

1. Testimonies Aren’t Just Memories — They Reflect God’s Goodness

Psalm 66:16 (NLT)

“Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me.”

Your story is more than your survival—it’s proof of His goodness.

2. Your Weakness Is Where God’s Strength Shows Up

2 Corinthians 12:9–10 (NLT)

“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’
So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ.
For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

God’s not ashamed of your weakness—He uses it to display His strength.

3. Confession Unlocks Healing and Reveals His Faithfulness

James 5:16 (NLT)

“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

1 John 1:9 (NLT)

“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

Psalm 32:5 (NLT)

“Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.”

Confession isn’t weakness—it’s worship.

4. Forgiveness and Repentance Reflect the Heart of God

Colossians 3:13 (NLT)

“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you.
Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”

Forgiveness releases you, even when they haven’t said “I’m sorry.”
Repentance realigns your heart with heaven.

5. Your True Identity Is Found in Christ, Not Your Mistakes

Romans 8:1 (NLT)

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.
The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

Your past is not your identity—Jesus is.
